MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two firefighters were injured in an apartment fire that killed one resident, according to officials.
WMC Action News 5 reported that the Memphis Fire Department responded to a blaze at the Whispering Pines Apartments and by the time they arrived, they were unable to get inside due to heavy burning on the second floor.
The crews worked for nearly an hour before they were able to get inside the apartments to search for victims. They found one resident had died because of the fire.
Two firefighters were transported to the hospital, one with a back injury and another with stomach muscle pain.
Resident Ryan Pye said the apartments are not well maintained and do not have working smoke detectors, which he believed could have saved the victim’s life.
“He moves slow and sometimes he doesn’t even come out the house and he just sits on his couch, so that would’ve given his neighbors enough time, I think, given them enough time to get him out the house,” Pye said.
