NEW CASTLE, N.H. — Monte Kozmits was unaware of the blaze in an apartment next to his until he was notified of a fire call.
“I got a text alert saying there was a structure fire at my house,” said the 19-year-old, who happens to be a volunteer firefighter with the New Castle Fire Department. Kozmits lived with his family in one of three apartments in the historic home at 152 Portsmouth Ave. The building was destroyed in the two-alarm fire that broke out around 9:15 Saturday.
As soon as he received the call, Kozmits said he began to smell smoke and heard the faint sound of a fire alarm in his neighbor’s apartment. He immediately alerted his parents and sister, who left the house safely with his dog, Watson.
