WASHINGTON — Five firefighters were injured while battling an apartment fire Saturday.
WJLA reported that 200 D.C. firefighters helped battle the blaze. Crews used ladders to save dozens of children and residents. Upon arrival, they found people jumping from windows to escape the flames.
“We had people hanging out windows and we were also told when we got here a couple of people from the second floor had jumped. Firefighters were able to catch them,” D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Gregory Dean said.
D.C. Fire officials said they found a man’s body on the top floor where the fire started; one person is still missing.
The injured firefighters and one resident were taken to the hospital, but are expected to make a full recovery.
