DALLAS — A week after a fire engine fell from an interstate overpass, a veteran lieutenant was discharged from the hospital following several days in the ICU.

Lieutenant John Hampton was discharged from Baylor Scott and White, surrounded by family, friends and fellow firefighters, WFAA reported.
“It’s pretty emotional, pretty emotional for everyone,” Executive Deputy Chief of Administration for the Dallas Police Department Jeff Wallis said. “Because each person knows him in their aspect. Tremendous character, tremendous guy, tremendous fireman.”
Hampton left the hospital with a thumbs-up, waving goodbye to his fellow firefighters.
The crash happened on July 21 on Interstate 345 and South Good Latimer Expressway, officials said. The four injured Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighters were transported to Baylor University Medical Center and have all since been released.
