MOUNTAIN VIEW, N.C. — Two firefighters with the Mountain View Volunteer Fire Department were injured Friday when their firetruck rolled over as they were responding to a call, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened about 7 p.m. on Zephyr-Mountain Park Road near State Road. The firetruck, a tanker carrying about 1,000 gallons, went out of control as it was going into a curve, Trooper Robert Boyes said. The truck went off the road to the right, near a bridge over a creek. The driver turned sharply to the left in attempt to get the truck back in control, Boyes said. The truck skidded and rolled onto its right side, striking the guardrail and spinning clockwise, he said.

The driver, Matthew Hurley II, 19, of Dobson suffered minor injuries and was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Another firefighter, Matthew Wood, 44, of State Road suffered arm injuries. He also was taken to Wake Forest Baptist, Boyes said.

Witnesses reported seeing the truck rocking left to right before the wreck, Boyes said.

Boyes said it was likely the water in the tank was shifting, making the truck difficult to keep under control.

Speed was not a factor in the wreck, he said. The truck had “significant damage,” Boyes said.

Another fire department was sent to the original call, which turned out to be a false alarm.
