NEW DEER, Scotland — Six firefighters were taken to hospital after they were involved in a crash as they responded to a 999 call.

The crew, from Ellon, were heading to an accident in the New Deer area when their fire engine left the road at about 7.25pm on Saturday.

Police and ambulance crews attended the one-vehicle accident on the A948 Ellon to New Deer road, and three firefighters were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance. The three others made their own way to the same hospital.

It is understood that all six have since left hospital.

A spokesman for Grampian Fire and Rescue Service said: “One fire engine from Ellon fire station was involved in a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A948 Ellon to New Deer road while proceeding to another accident in the same area.”

The accident happened a mile south of Auchnagatt as the crew responded to reports of an accident on the B9170 New Deer to Cuminestown road. Other emergency crews had also been called to the scene.

Two adults and a child were taken to hospital after being freed from the wreckage of their car by firefighters using cutting gear.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We took three people, two adults and one child, to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

A man was also taken to the same hospital, complaining of abdominal pains, after his car collided with a bus on the A947 Turriff to Banff road.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near Plaidy, at about 11.30pm on Saturday. Nobody else was injured. Black ice

In the Highlands, meanwhile, a man suffered serious head injuries in a crash on the A9 after the Inverness to Perth route was affected by black ice on Saturday morning.

The accident involving two cars, a Mazda and a Ford, happened just south of the Tomatin turn-off.

The injured man, who has not been identified, was taken by road ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. It was said his injuries, while serious, were not life-threatening.
