BOCA RATON, Fla. — A Boca Raton firefighter was hospitalized early Thursday after a fire engine ran over his right leg as a fire crew answered an alarm.

Capt. Mike McBrien, 32, was in stable condition at Delray Medical Center. The incident happened outside a residence in Woodfield Hunt Club, a development in Boca Raton near the corner of Yamato and Jog Roads.

John Luca, president of the Boca firefighter’s union, said that McBrien apparently suffered some sort of dizziness as he climbed into the truck at about 2:30 a.m. as the crew wrapped up a response to a fire alarm. It caused him to fall near the fire engine’s right front as the crew was backing up. And the right front tire ran over his leg, Luca said.

“It could have been a tragic accident,” Luca said.
