PENOBSCOT, Maine — A father and son rode bicycles cross-country to help raise money for their own town fire department. Through their trek across the U.S., they found a bigger mission to capitalize on.

Volunteer firefighters from Penobscot, Hugh Evans and Alex Turnanski rode from Bolinas, California to their hometown in Maine with hopes to raise $150,000 for their volunteer fire company.

“It’s difficult to raise that kind of money for an apparatus which really protects everybody. If you visit here from Massachusetts you are still you are still protected by the fire department that is local,” said Evans.
