WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. — A 22-year-old Ill. man has been arrested after he reportedly stole a fire truck, and then crashed it on Tuesday morning.
The unidentified driver somehow stole the truck and while driving, skidded off the road and flipped the truck upside down as it landed at the bottom of an embankment, according to WAFB.
Williamson County Fire Protection District Chief Jeremy Norris initially thought that one of his firefighters had gotten into an accident.
“We worried, is somebody hurt, or have they hurt somebody? Then we got there and find out that it wasn’t one of our people. That somebody had stole [the truck] from us,” he said.
The driver was taken to the hospital to treat his injuries and then arrested, facing numerous charges.
Chief Norris said that the 2011 fire truck has $250,000 in damage and could take up to a year to replace.
For now, the station will have to make due with 1987 truck they have in reserve.
