VENTNOR, N.J. — A former fire department lieutenant will be allowed to return to work , two years after he was convicted of a DUI.
As part of a “last-chance” deal, Michael Tripician, 32, accepted a demotion, a pay cut and a six-month unpaid suspension. He will be subject to random alcohol testing and faces termination if he is involved in a major disciplinary event in the next 10 years. He will not receive any back pay.
Tripician was arrested March 4, 2014 after flipping his vehicle with his two young children inside. The New Jersey Online reported Tripician allegedly attempted to flee the scene by running into the ocean; he also kicked an EMT in the face.
He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated, careless driving and obstructing the administration of the law.
Tripician, who returned to work this week, will be making roughly $10,000 less than his former $95,000 annual pay.
Ventnor Mayor Beth Hotlzman told the Shore News Today that Tripician is in long-term treatment to support his recovery. “In fact, Mr. Tripician now volunteers his time at multiple treatment centers, speaking to and assisting others.”
