Greece, N.Y. — Thirty-five years later, police are still investigating the fire at the Greece Holiday Inn that killed ten people.

“These people deserve some kind of answers if not ultimately justice,” said Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter. The case was reopened two years ago. Last month the investigation lead police to the Greece Ridge Fire Department. “I am surprised because I believe the truth is in the statements of the witnesses that night,” said Greece Ridge Fire Chief Bud Phillips.

“I think 35 years is a long time.” Phillips was an off-duty firefighter the night of the incident. He told investigators he was driving by, saw the flames and called for help. “I understand why people don’t want to help people now — but as I’ve told all of our people: if they found themselves in the same position that they would do the exact same thing, and I would do that exact same thing today,” said Phillips.
