WESTLAND, Mich. — Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill renaming a portion of Ford Road in Westland for the city’s first firefighter to lose his life in the line of duty.

According to a written statement from the governor’s office, Ford Road between Newburgh and Wayne roads will now be known as the Firefighter Brian Woehlke Memorial Highway. House Bill 4985 was sponsored by Rep. Robert Kosowski.

Woehlke, 29, died May 8, 2013 when a roof collapsed on him during a fire at a strip mall on Wayne Road. The married father from Dearborn had been on the job for 10 months.

Wayne-Westland fire officials have said the cause of the fire was arson. Woehlke’s death has been ruled a homicide. He died of soot and smoke inhalation and thermal burns.

Fire officials said no arrests have been made in Woehlke’s death.
