BOSTON — A district fire chief retired last week after pleading guilty to assault and lewd conduct charges.

Paul Hutchinson, 54, chose to retire instead of potentially facing departmental charges after he pleaded guilty to exposing himself to a woman last year.

The 29-year department veteran was ordered to a department hearing Aug. 30 after officials learned of the charges in July. However, Hutchinson submitted his retirement papers the day before.

Fire department Spokesman Steve MacDonald told the Boston Globe Hutchinson will get to keep his pension since he retired.
