FILLMORE, Calif. — Fillmore will buy a new fire engine and enforce zoning and building codes with about $100,000 it will get in federal grants.

The City Council officially accepted the money Tuesday night. The most cash-strapped city in Ventura County, Fillmore could not pay for increased code enforcement or a new fire engine without federal help.

The grants are part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant Program and are funneled to Fillmore through Ventura County. The program aims to alleviate poverty and blight and help low- and moderate-income communities. The agency spent $3.9 billion nationwide on the grants last year, according to its website.
