WYMORE, N.E. — Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. will award a $14,800 grant to Wymore Volunteer Fire and Rescue for the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera and a pickup truck for grass fires.
The money, more than one-third the amount of the department’s $40,000 annual budget, will enable firefighters to buy a vehicle to be used for the growing number of grass fires in the Wymore area. Specifically, the pickup truck will be modified and retrofitted with the proper equipment needed to fight crop and field fires in this community of 1,600 people.
Wymore Fire Chief Gordon Michaelis and the department’s 30 volunteer firefighters will also receive a new high-tech thermal imaging camera. This will enable them to “see” through smoke and darkness to quickly locate anyone trapped in a building, including fellow firefighters. It will also play a major role in reducing property damage. With a thermal imaging camera in hand, firefighters can often locate hot spots inside walls and extinguish them before they spread.
