STAMFORD, Conn. — First responders in Stamford now have body armor thanks to a state grant.

Stamford Advocate reported that an inter-town Capital Expenditure Grant was awarded by the state of Connecticut to purchase tactical protective equipment for both firefighters and EMS providers, according to Stamford Mayor David Martin.

“The world is changing, and there have been more and more active shooter incidents with numerous fatalities and many injuries,” Mayor Martin said. “If something like a Las Vegas or Orlando does happen, we want to ensure our first responders are prepared with the highest level of protection possible to respond quickly in providing timely and critical medical care to the injured.”

The grant was part of a multi-town strategy to improve services by sharing equipment. Stamford will share the body armor with three other cities as needed.

“In the city of Stamford, we are prepared for responding to these dynamic incidents using the Rescue Task Force Model,” Public Safety, Health and Welfare Director Ted Jankowski said. “Victims of active shooter and or mass casualty incidents with penetrating trauma can bleed to death in as little as three minutes. Providing appropriate Tactical Personal Protective Equipment for our EMTs, paramedics and firefighters provides for an improved medical response where immediate medical treatment is critical. Saving lives is a priority.”
