SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Firefighters who were just laid off for the winter were called in to help with the California wildfires.
KRCTV reported that only two days after laying them off, the Shasta-Trinity Cal Fire Unit called in 15 firefighters to return to work.
“They are excited to do it,” Shasta-Trinity Cal Fire PIO Cheryl Buliavac said. “To have gone from being laid off on Monday, to literally getting that phone call a couple of days later to come back into work, it’s something that they want to do; it’s in their nature to want to help and when we see these huge devastating fires breaking out, everyone wants to go help.”
In addition to the firefighters who just got their jobs back, hand crews, dozers and strike teams have all been sent to the area to help.
According to Buliavac, the longest the firefighters can help is 21 days, but she added that it’s their nature to be there, no matter the time or place.
