MANCHESTER, N.H. — A fire department is rallying behind their colleague as he battles cancer.

WMUR reported that Manchester Fire Department firefighter Mike Meehan was diagnosed with cancer in October, and more than a dozen of his colleagues recently showed their support for him by shaving their heads.

“We had a little barbecue,” Meehan said. “They took my hair off, and the next thing I know, there was a line of guys behind me. I’m speechless. It almost brings me to tears.”

Meehan’s colleagues are also raising money to offset the cost of his medical bills by selling T-shirts.

“Obviously, we kept it firehouse-based with the Maltese Cross,” firefighter Joe Russo said. “We found the Finnish good luck symbol, because Mikey is Irish and Finnish.”

“They’re $20 apiece,” firefighter Chad Gamache added. “We’re pooling the money, and when we’re done selling shirts, the bank is going to cut Mike a check.”

Meehan will receive 100 percent of the proceeds.

“It makes me feel great,” Meehan said. “In fact, it’s hard to accept it. What do you say to someone who says, ‘We’re going to do this really nice thing, and we went out of our way to do what we can?’”

Meehan said he hopes to get back to work after his chemotherapy sessions end.
