PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — Funeral services were held Wednesday for a firefighter after he succumbed to brain cancer.

Lt. Christopher E. Hill, 46, died after a two-year battle with brain cancer July 21. He leaves behind his wife, and two children. In an effort to honor and thank Hill for his service, members of the community fundraised $40,800 out of a $200,000 goal.

Funeral services for Hill were held Wednesday, where firefighters from other departments took over duties so fellow colleagues could attend the funeral, reported the Bowie Patch.

Hill, a 14-year firefighter veteran, also served in the Army. He received full military honors and a line of duty death service; his form of cancer was classified as occupational and service-related.

“Christ has worked hard to promote through the ranks. He has always been passionate about his job and felt pride for his crew,” wrote his family on their fundraising page.
