Renowned fire photographer, firefighter loses battle with cancer

Stephen Skipton Sr. was a 25-year veteran of the fire service and also responded to the World Trade Center attacks

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. — A 25-year veteran of the fire service died Saturday after his battle with cancer.

SConFire.com co-owner Stephen Skipton Sr., started his life in the fire service as a teenager as a junior member of the Brooklawn (N.J.) Fire Department. He served as a volunteer firefighter and later moved through the ranks to chief of the Bellmawr Park (N.J.) Volunteer Fire Department.

He also worked as an EMT for University EMS in Newark, N.J. for 17 years, according to ObitsforLife.com. Following 9/11, he volunteered his time to go to the World Trade Center as part of the New Jersey EMS task force to aid in rescue efforts, according to the report.

In 2010, he pursued his dream as working as a career firefighter and moved to Goose Greek, S.C., according to the report.

In addition to his fire photography work in New Jersey and his work with SConFire, Skipton was editor of Philly Fire News.

Survivors include his wife, Jennifer, two sons Stephen Skipton Jr., and Drew Skipton and his two twin daughters, Isabella and Marissa.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, Aug. 28 at 1:00 p.m. at Northwood Church 2600 N. Main Street, Summerville, S.C.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. prior to the memorial service.
