NEWINGTON, Conn. — Nineteen people experienced symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning Wednesday after a heating unit in their office building broke down and began spewing high levels of the gas, fire officials said.

An inspector from Connecticut Natural Gas called the Newington Volunteer Fire Department at about noon after discovering extremely high levels of carbon monoxide in the building, at 131 Day St., Deputy Fire Chief Frank Papa said.

Eight people were taken to an area hospital, and 11 people refused treatment, he said.

Papa said all 19 people had been complaining of headaches and nausea. Most of them work for the same company renting space in the office building.

The building was evacuated and ventilated, and Papa said the heating unit should be repaired by today.
