HARRISBURG, Pa. — This week, our Engine 21 Team finds out how quickly toxic levels of carbon monoxide can fill a garage, when a vehicle is left running with the garage door closed. It’s a simple mistake that many drivers make when warming up their cars during cold, winter weather.
With the supervision of Harrisburg Deputy Fire Chief Dan Soulier, we placed a CO detector several feet from our test vehicle, and started the engine. Almost immediately, we received a reading of 96PPM (Parts Per Million).
“Once you start getting over 130, 150 parts per million, you’re going to start having severe headaches,” says Chief Soulier. “You’re going to end up becoming disillusioned, and with that then, its going to become difficult to function to save yourself. If nobody else is there to help you.”
