VENTURA, Calif. — A celebrity chef is working to make things a little easier for the firefighters on the frontlines of the California wildfires.
Chef Jose Andres, who owns 30 restaurants around the United States and has been called the Culinary Commander, has recruited local chefs to make food for those working to extinguish the Thomas Fire.
Andres founded World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that feeds people after disasters, and through the organization he and his team have served 18,000 meals for firefighters.
“It’s very simple -- we are chefs and we know one thing, which is to feed people,” Andres said.
Meals are prepared twice a day and are delivered to firefighters who say they are grateful for the hot meal after a long day of work.
“We’ve been out here for 11 days now … eating food at basecamp and sack lunches,” one firefighter said. “This is the best so far. We really appreciate it.”
