NEW YORK — An FDNY firefighter made a close call rescue Wednesday afternoon after spotting an unconscious man’s foot while heavy smoke filled an apartment.

Firefighter Gerard McManus, a 14-year veteran, said he saw a foot on the floor while he was going through the smoke-filled dining room.

“He was in a little pocket of fire,” McManus told the New York Daily News. “There were flames in the room in front of him and in front of the house.”

McManus dragged the man through the back door, where paramedics outside revived him; he is in stable condition at the hospital.

“It’s a little surreal. Your training does take over,” McManus said. “It’s a team effort. Without everyone else, I couldn’t have done what I did.”
