PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — Assistant Fire Chief Alicia Francis was once told women didn’t belong in the fire department.

How times have changed. Now the Bowie resident is the first woman director of the Prince George’s County EMS/Fire Department Training Academy. “I feel proud that women in the fire service are finally being recognized and respected,” she said. “We’re able to break those barriers.” In February, Francis was appointed to the position, taking over from Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth Fusco.

Recruits praise the active role Francis, 48, takes in their education, claiming her hands on approach has improved their performance, grades and morale. “She has a strong passion for education and she wants to see us succeed,” said Michael Dugan, a trainee from the Career Recruit School’s 50th class. “She knows what motivates us. She knows what gives us drive, and we are succeeding because of it.” Francis always knew she wanted to help others. As a child she had aspired to become a doctor, but her experience with paramedics during a life threatening car accident persuaded her otherwise.
