GREENOCK, Scotland — A firefighter who was paralyzed after a wall collapsed on him during a fire spoke publicly for the first time this week.
Firefighter Andy Adams, 49, was severely injured while responding to the fire last year; he has no feeling from the chest down. Adams suffered a number of serious injuries, including a severed spinal cord, fractured neck and three broken vertebrae, reported the Greenock Telegraph. He was in intensive care for two weeks and in a medically induced coma.
Since the incident, Adams has had and continues to relearn basic skills, like how to eat, drink and swallow. He is now in a high dependency care facility and will begin rehabilitation.
Despite the many challenges ahead, Adams said the outpouring of support has given him the motivation to keep going.
“The whole world becomes a challenge,” Adams said. “But it’s only half time in the game. There’s a long way to go … this type of injury really does expose you.”
In an effort to support Adams, the Fire Brigade Union donated over $31,000 to aid in his rehabilitation.
