HOUSTON — A Houston fire captain died due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, the city’s fire union announced.

Houston Fire Department Capt. Tommy Searcy, 45, who served with the department for 18 years, died “after valiantly fighting Coronavirus / COVID-19 for several weeks,” the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association (HPFFA) said in a statement.

“We mourn the loss of our firefighter friend and brother, Tommy Searcy. Please keep Tommy’s family, friends and station crew in your thoughts and prayers,” HPFFA President Patrick M. Lancton said in a statement. “The Searcy family asked us to share thanks to the community for so strongly supporting them during Tommy’s illness. Tommy’s death is a reminder to be vigilant in our efforts to keep families, friends and station crews safe in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Houston Fire Department will classify Searcy’s death as a line-of-duty death, according to the HPFFA. He is the third Houston firefighter to die due to COVID-19.

Searcy is survived by three daughters and his twin brother Tony, who is a senior captain at the Houston Fire Department.
