LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles firefighter-paramedic has died due to COVID-19 complications.

Firefighter-Paramedic Jose M. Perez, 44, who served with the Los Angeles Fire Department for 16-and-a-half years, died Saturday, according to the department.

Perez is survived by his wife and three children. A procession was held Saturday night to escort Perez home from the hospital, and included members of the La Palma Police Department, Orange County Fire Authority, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol.

Perez is the first member of the Los Angeles Fire Department to die due to the virus, according to CBS Los Angeles. A total of 145 LAFD personnel have tested positive as of Friday, with 108 having recovered and returned to duty. Officials say 26 members are recovering at home.
