NEW YORK — The FDNY has announced that more than 1,300 of its members who were forced to stay home due to COVID-19 have now returned to work.
The EMTs, paramedics and firefighters, all of whom were either exposed to or diagnosed with the virus, are now back on full duty, the department said in a tweet Tuesday.
“FDNY members are responding to a record number of medical calls and they continue to meet this unprecedented challenge head on,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a statement. “I am incredibly proud of the men and women of this department who are demonstrating every single day throughout this pandemic why they are known as the best and bravest.”
In total, nearly 500 members of the FDNY have tested positive for COVID-19, according to ABC News.
The department has been handling the highest call volume in its history due to the pandemic, EMS Chief Lillian Bonsignore told EMS1 last week.
