SWEPSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina volunteer firefighter died on Saturday due to COVID-19.

The Swepsonville Fire Department announced the death of Firefighter Larry Lasley, 63, in a Facebook post Sunday night. Lasley had served as a volunteer firefighter for 44 years, joining the Swepsonville department in 1977 and also serving as a member of the 54 East Fire Department.

“We are all extremely proud to have served with such a dedicated, enthusiastic and hard working firefighter. He would make us all laugh and smile with stories, gestures and his good hearted approach on life,” Swesponville Fire Department officials wrote. “We all knew if the pagers went off, Larry was going to get an Engine out of Station #10. He was a true cornerstone to the department and he will truly be missed!”

Lasley had been hospitalized with the virus since Christmas Eve, Swepsonville Fire Chief Tim Allbritton told WFMY News 2. He is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.

Lasley’s daughter Heather Walker said he had no pre-existing conditions and is believed to have contracted COVID-19 through a family member.
