SOUTH POINT, Ohio — The U.S. Fire Administration on Thursday announced the line of duty death of South Point Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Carl Frederick Kleinman of COVID-19.

The USFA noted that the chief contracted COVID-19 while responding to numerous emergency response calls.

Kleinman, 55, passed away on September 15 after a brief illness.

South Point VFD Chief Mark Goodall told WSAZ that Kleinman was available to help anyone who needed it, saying it’s a devastating loss for the South Point community.

Kleinman served as a firefighter for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
