LINCOLN, Neb. — A fire department has reported several incidents of vandalism, with damages to both the station and firefighters’ personal vehicles.
1011 Now reported that most recently, Lincoln Fire Department firefighter Jason Relford walked out of the station after a 24-hour shift and found that someone had thrown rocks at his windshield.
“The windshield was busted out, the hood has a bunch of dents and scratches on it and then all along the driver’s side, it almost looks like they stood there with a rock and repeatedly hit it in different places,” Relford said.
Lincoln Police Department said that less than a month ago, another incident occurred when someone busted three of the station’s windows with rocks, resulting in $3,000 in damages.
The Lincoln Police Department said six incidents have been reported since 2015, but there could have been more.
Lincoln Firefighter’s Association president Ron Trouba is working to increase security at the station.
“Increase the lighting that’s outside, some security cameras, fenced parking as we work on the design for the new stations that’s one of the things we’ve asked the city to consider,” Trouba said.
Relford said the damage to his car is going to cost more than $6,000 to repair.
"[I’m] frustrated and disappointed, you know we work hard for the things that we have and people forget that when we leave the station we’re still people we’ve got bills to pay we’ve got families to take care of,” he said.
