FAIRFAX, Va. — The International Association of Fire Chiefs reminded emergency responders to avoid self-dispatching to disaster locations as Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast.
In a press release, the IAFC reminded the fire service to be “disciplined in its response” and “readily available to the local communities.”
The announcement added that agencies should also be available when assistance is requested from affected areas.
The IAFC’s stance on self-dispatching is further highlighted on their position page.
“Uncontrolled and uncoordinated arrival of resources at emergencies cause significant accountability issues as a result of personnel freelancing and creating additional safety risks to firefighters, civilians and others who are operating within the parameters of the incident action plan,” the position states.
Additionally, the IAFC said responders wishing to volunteer should visit the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.
