FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — A veteran firefighter-paramedic is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

FBNewsLeader.com reported that Chett Lyncker, 34, with the Fernandina Beach Fire Department, was found dead in his home Wednesday by police officers investigating possible domestic violence involving Lyncker and his girlfriend.

Police made a forced entry into Lyncker’s apartment, finding his body in what looked like a “staged suicide.” A neighbor said they heard a single gunshot at 1:10 a.m., but did not call police because she was unsure if the sound was a gunshot.

Police Chief James Hurley described the case as a “sad, sad situation” and said Lyncker was a “troubled guy.”

Fernandina Beach Fire Chief Ty Silcox said Lyncker “was dealing with some personal issues,” according to the report.

“We’re reeling right now. We’re a close family — we’re dealing with it,” Chief Silcox said. “The city has an employee assistance program and I am working on getting grief counselors.”
