BOULDER, Colo. — A firefighter who sustained serious injuries during a training drill in June was awarded $20,000 Tuesday.

Fire Engineer Tom Albert was thrown more than 30 feet in the air after a hose line from an engine was stretched too far. Albert suffered injuries to his head, spine, legs and lungs, reported the Denver Channel.

“This means a lot, and I don’t know how to put it into words, but I am extremely grateful for this opportunity, for this donation,” Albert said. “I can’t wait to get back … I just enjoy being a firefighter … I enjoy making someone’s day better.”

The donation, presented by OnStar, was given to the 20-year veteran as part of the company’s efforts in aiding public safety workers injured while on duty.

“The first responder community plays a vital role in working with OnStar advisors to quickly deliver emergency services,” OnStar COO Christine Sitek said.

Albert said he hopes to be back on duty by May 2017.
