Driver charged with manslaughter in crash that killed firefighter

LOS ANGELES — A driver was charged with manslaughter in the crash that killed a Georgia firefighter who was on vacation in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Times reported that Benjamin Seider was driving under the influence April 10 when he ran a red light and smashed into a car. Three firefighters were in the car Seider hit; the force of the crash caused firefighter Ron Herens to be thrown out of the vehicle.

Herens was pronounced dead at the scene and the two other firefighters suffered serious injuries.

Seider was formally charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving with a 0.08 percent blood alcohol content causing injuries. If convicted, he faces more than 12 years in prison.

Seider pleaded not guilty and remains free after posting $100,000 bail.
