CYPRESS, Calif. — A kitten trapped in razor wire was rescued by firefighters Monday morning after a resident heard the cat crying between two walls, authorities said.

The cat suffered several deep cuts while it hung on the sharp wire and was taken to a nearby veterinarian’s office, said Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The cat will be taken to an emergency hospital to receive additional care, said Sheila Choi, CEO of Fuzzy Pet Foundation, which rescues and helps to rehabilitate homeless animals.

Choi said Fuzzy Pet Foundation was notified by the veterinarian’s office when the injured kitten came in.

“The vet bills will be quite extensive,” Choi said. “It’s pretty gruesome.”

Randi Custodio, 21, who lives in the 9100 block of Julie Beth Street, said she heard the cat crying from her bedroom at about 3 a.m.

The fence where the kitten was found is located between two walls that are about 11/2 feet apart from each other. The fence is topped with razor wire, which the cat appeared to have fallen into, she said.

“My mom and I woke up and found her around 6 a.m.,” Custodio said.

The cat was covered with blood and had gashes on its paws and body, she said.

The Fuzzy Pet Foundation (www.fuzzyrescue.com) was called by the veterinarian’s office to help pay for its medical care and to help find the cat an owner, Choi said.

The medical cost is expected to be around $1,300, Choi said. The cat is being treated at the VCA Animal Hospital in Cerritos.

Choi said the cat is about 12 weeks old and has been named Bridget.

Anyone interested in adopting the cat can contact the organization through its website, she said.
