SPRING GARDEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A construction worker had to be extricated from a building after drywall fell on him, said John Woods, battalion chief for Spring Garden Township Fire Department.

The 29-year-old man was taken to York Hospital. The worker did not lose consciousness at the scene and his injuries were non-life threatening, according to Woods.

Shortly after 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were dispatched to the corner of Jackson Street and Virginia Avenue, where construction workers are doing a York College dorm building project, he said.

The man was on the building’s third floor when sheet rock was being hauled into the building.

“I believe it fell over on top of him,” Woods said. “It took about 20 minutes to extricate him through the third-floor window.”

The man had to be put into a Stokes basket, carried over the window and placed in a basket of an aerial tower truck, which lowed him to the ground, Woods said.

The other construction workers were “very helpful” and could resume their work, he said.

Firefighters cleared the scene about 2:40 p.m. There were no other injuries, Woods said.

Victory Fire Co. and York Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
