ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Officials have identified the motorcyclist killed in northwest Albuquerque on Sunday as an off-duty Bernalillo County firefighter.

Albuquerque police said Sunday that the motorcyclist lost control, hit a guardrail and was pronounced dead at the scene near N.M. 528 and Cottonwood.

The Bernalillo County Fire Department later wrote that firefighter Nathan Urbany had been killed in a wreck, and APD spokesman Simon Drobik confirmed the victim of the motorcycle crash was a BCFD employee.

“It is with deepest regret and sorrow to announce the untimely passing of Bernalillo County Fire Fighter Nathan Urbany…who was involved in an off-duty motor vehicle accident,” BCFD wrote in a Facebook post. “We are working closely with the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 244 in accommodating members, family and friends to provide support and condolences.”
