ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. — Firefighters and members of the community are mourning the death of its first paid firefighter.

Roger Dale Huffman, 72, died Dec. 28, 2016. Huffman joined the Roanoke County Fire and Rescue in 1967 when he was 22 years old. He served the department for over 20 years before retiring.

Huffman also served as the Hollins Fire Company fire chief for 11 years.

Huffman’s son, Gary, also served as a firefighter and retired as fire marshal in 2014.

“He never wanted to bring any fame or anything like that, or any glitter into it. He was just doing his job,” Huffman told the Roanoke Times. “I think most firefighters are like that.”
