CINCINNATI — A building where a firefighter died after falling down an elevator shaft in 2015 has reopened.
WCPO reported that firefighter Daryl Gordon was searching for residents trapped in a five-story apartment building when he fell down the shaft. He didn’t see a warning written on the door due to smoky conditions.
The building has reopened with a new owner and a restoration cost $2.4 million, including a new elevator with safer doors. Other upgrades include brighter lights and more smoke detectors.
Cincinnati Firefighters Union President Matt Alter applauded the new safety measures, but expressed concern about long-term sustainability of the property.
The new owner, Charles Tassell, said he will stay on top of it and plans to be a long-time owner of the property.
