FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. — A volunteer firefighter died Monday after high winds caused a tree to crash down on his truck.

WSBTV reported that Fannin County firefighter Stanley Henson, 47, was on his way to his job as a truck driver when the tree fell on his personal vehicle.

Henson died on the scene, according to police.

“It was a freak accident, nothing to do to prevent it or just based on the weather and this is a rural road and there are lots of trees on the side of the roadway,” Georgia State Trooper Chris Jones said.

Fire Chief Larry Thomas said he had just worked with Henson at a crash scene hours before his death. He was just a month away from being promoted to lieutenant.

“He was a great man. He was always there when I needed him,” Chief Thomas said. “He was like a brother.”
