LOS ANGELES -- A Georgia firefighter was killed and two of his colleagues were critically injured Monday night after their car was hit by a suspected drunken driver.
Police say the off-duty firefighters were in Los Angeles as part of a group of firefighters visiting from Georgia, reported ABC7.
Marietta Fire Department Chief Jackie Gibbs issued a statement early Tuesday morning announcing the death of Marietta Firefighter Ron C. Herens.
Herens was on vacation with four other firefighters from the Marietta Fire Department, Gibbs said. He was a passenger in the car along with two other firefighters when they were struck.
The other two firefighters, Dillon Guest and Doug Blanchard were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, reported Fox 5 Atlanta.
The DUI suspect was taken into custody.
Funeral arrangements for Herens are pending, according to the department.
