IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A fire chief died Sunday after his car overturned and caught fire on an interstate.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Reynolds Volunteer Fire Department Chief Richard Sales, 52, was driving to the Child Passenger Safety Conference to accept an award on behalf of the department when his car overturned and caught fire.

Chief Sales had served in all positions of the department before succeeding his father in the chief role, where he stayed for 10 years.

No details have been released on the cause of the crash. We will update you once more information becomes available.
