GRANITEVILLE, S.C. — An Aiken County firefighter was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Saturday morning in Graniteville.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said 59-year-old Phillip E. Turner, of Graniteville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Bettis Academy Rd and I-20.
Carlton said Turner was driving 2010 Ford pickup truck north on Bettis Academy Road, toward the Sage Mill Fire Station, when he attempted to pass two vehicles.
Turner then struck the rear of a 2000 Freightliner that had stopped to make a left turn onto the I-20 west ramp, Carlton said.
Turner was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, Carlton said.
Carlton identified the driver of the second vehicle as Figuredo A. Cuellar of Miami Springs, Florida.
No one else was injured in the crash, he said.
South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident.
