OCEAN CITY, Md. — A firefighter-paramedic was killed in a motorcycle crash Thursday.

DelmarvaNow.com reported that Howard Alan Schweitzer, a firefighter-paramedic with the Ocean City Fire Department, was riding his motorcycle when a vehicle failed to stop at an intersection and drove directly into his path.

Schweitzer, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

The driver and two other passengers in the vehicle were not injured.

“It’s devastating,” Jessica Waters, Ocean City spokeswoman, said. “I know that the fire departments are grieving as is the town as a whole. It’s just a terrible loss for the town and the fire department.”

Schweitzer, who was close to retirement, had just been sworn in on Monday as councilman-at-large.

“Alan was a dedicated member of our department for 27 years,” Laurel Fire Department Chief Tim West said. “He had a kind heart and a gentle soul. The department and the community have suffered a great loss today. He will be greatly missed.”

An investigation into the crash is underway.
