MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Investigators in Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday released a video of a suspect in the shooting over the weekend that killed a veteran New Orleans firefighter outside of a nightclub there.

The surveillance video shows a man wielding a gun walking up a sidewalk and motioning to someone on his right moments before the slaying of Gregory Howard, 37, who authorities believe was hit in the head by a stray bullet during the incident.

Authorities have not announced any arrests in the case, which is being investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Civil service records show that Howard had been a member of the New Orleans Fire Department since Sept. 16, 2007. In November, he had been promoted to the position of “fire apparatus operator,” a job that involved him driving his and his colleagues’ truck out to emergency scenes.

He had gone to Memphis to participate in a basketball tournament for first responders when he was killed outside the Mynt nightclub. Shortly before the deadly gunfire, a group of people had confronted the club’s DJ with complaints about the music and had been kicked out of the club.

Howard’s survivors include his widow and two sons, according to Nick Felton, the president of New Orleans’ firefighters union.
