MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Miami-Dade firefighter whose son died in an unauthorized training exercise in June was among three employees who resigned amid an ongoing investigation.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that firefighters Francisco A. Camero, Steven Colon and Rafael Fernandez resigned effective Oct. 30, NBC Miami reported.

Miami-Dade County’s Chief of Public Safety said the training was not a department-sanctioned event

The fatal fire occurred on June 21 at a three-story building in Virginia Gardens. The building’s owner told NBC6 they had a verbal agreement for “non-destructive” training. Miami-Dade County’s Chief of Public Safety James Reyes confirmed the exercise was not authorized.

According to WSVN, during the training exercise, someone added excessive fuel to what was intended to be a small demonstration fire in a tar pot.

Fabian Camero, a certified EMT not employed by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, was at the training exercise for reasons still under investigation. Fabian Camero, son of Francisco Camero, was rushed to the hospital after being critically injured during the unauthorized training. He died a day later, NBC6 reports.

A fire department spokesperson confirmed that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
