HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person who appeared to be living in a Hutchinson storage unit facility died Tuesday after it caught fire, the Hutchinson Fire Department said.

Officials are working to identify the person and notify their family.

The Hutchinson Fire Department was called shortly after 8 a.m. to a commercial structure fire at 4th Street and Bonebrake in the eastern part of the city. Hutch police were already at the scene and reported seeing smoke coming from the building.

One of the eight storage facilities was filled with smoke, and fire crews cut locks and doors to enter several compartments of the storage unit. While putting out the fire, firefighters found one person dead inside a unit, the fire department said in a news release Tuesday.

Officials say the person appeared to be living inside the unit. The storage facility owner was informed, the department said.

Investigators are working to name the victim and cause of death and to learn the cause of the fire.

Some of the storage units sustained moderate damage, while others had smoke damage.
