STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — They are heroes to more than just people.
After dousing a fire at the Todt Hill Houses in Castleton Corners Friday morning, firefighters could be seen trying to save the life of a cat injured in the blaze.
Six people -- three civilians and three firefighters -- suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the blaze at 20 La Guardia Ave., which was called in at 10:23 a.m. on the fifth floor of the apartment building, according to a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS.
Officials huddled around a black feline, which appeared motionless on its side on the sidewalk.
One paramedic had oxygen strapped to the animal’s mouth, while a second spent several minutes massaging the cat’s chest in an apparent bid to perform CPR.
The cat remained motionless throughout the ordeal.
It was not immediately clear if the animal survived.
The “all-hands” fire prompted a response of 60 firefighters and 12 units.
Two women and a child were seen being evaluated in an ambulance.
Further information will be posted as it becomes available.
